Robert Smail's Printing Works
Robert Smail's Printing Works, Innerleithen (Scottish Borders) is a completely
restored printing works where one can see how printing was done at the beginning
of the nineteenth century. The buildings contain an office, paper-store with
reconstructed water-wheel, composing and press rooms.
Visitors can discover the secrets of the printing works from archive based posters;
and watch and listen to the demonstrations given by the compositor and printer.
If time permits the visitor can try typesetting by hand and can discover where
much of the computer language was traditionally used, the point size, leading,
justification etc.
Printing will be demonstrated at the Edinburgh Book Festival in August and at the Peebles Art Festival in September. A Print your own Christmas Card will take place in October. A short walk will take place, attended by a ranger, along the Tweed to obtain objects which one can use to print (e.g. leaves) before commencing work at Smails.
A second study box is being organised at present. The boxes will be held at the Resource Centres at Peebles and Melrose. It is recommended that a visit to Smails be made after usage of t he box to reinforce the learning and broaden the subject. An educational pack may be purchased for use in schools (price £5).
The pack links into the 5-14 curriculum providing not only information but also
the opportunity for projects and role playing. Robert Smails provides tremendous
value for money for schools.
