Gladstone's Land

Gladstone's Land is a fine example of an Edinburgh Old Town apartment block or 'land'. Thomas Gledstanes, a prosperous merchant, purchased it in 1617. He enlarged the building and rented out the apartments to tenants from various social classes and financial backgrounds. Two floors, furnished authentically to give a feeling of what it was like to live in Edinburgh in the seventeenth century, are open to the public. Features of the building are the remarkable painted ceilings and wall decoration and the reconstructed shop booth with replicas of 17th century goods.
