Laird to Orra Loon - Environmental Studies for Primary Schools
The first Laird to Orra Loon project took place at Leith Hall in May 1996. Its aim was to celebrate the wonderful rich culture and properties of North East Scotland and offer the opportunity to explore the very different Laird to Orra Loonlifestyles to be found on a country estate in rural Aberdeenshire through 300 years. The project proved to be an enormous hit with primary schools of North East Scotland achieving the correct balance of education and entertainment. Undoubtedly the more enjoyable a project is for children, the more they learn and retain.

The project has completed five very successful years, with over 1,000 pupils participating annually. Schools are asked to choose three activities out of the eight on offer allowing them to develop their visit to Leith Hall to complement their own classroom studies. All the activities on offer have direct links with the 5-14 Curriculum Guidelines.

Laird to Orra LoonSince it was established, the project has developed in such a way that, while it is able to retain its own identity and educational worth, it also provides an opportunity for teaching staff to consider the use of other Trust properties to enhance their class studies. In essence, Leith Hall, through the Laird to Orra Loon project, is becoming the gateway to educational resources available at Trust properties in Grampian.
