The National Trust for Scotland is Scotland's leading conservation charity and is supported by it's membership, now a quarter of a million strong. It receives no government funding. The NTS cares for over 120 historic sites (from castles to cottages to countryside) including mountain areas significant for both their cultural and natural history, such as Ben Lawers, Ben Lomand and Glencoe. The task of the Trust, set out in various Acts of Parliament, is to act as a guardian, and promote the care of the nation's heritage of architectural, scenic and historic sites, and encourage everyone's enjoyment of them.
